OCEAN PARK COMMUNITY CENTER TO HOLD HOLIDAY EVENT FOR HOMELESS

Kaufman and Broad will Sponsor Hot Meal and Gifts for Attendees

Santa Monica (December 12, 2000) - The Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC) will hold a holiday party for an expected 300 homeless men and women sponsored by Kaufman and Broad, Southern California's largest homebuilder. The event will take place at the Ocean Park Community Center, 1616 Seventh Street on Thurs., Dec. 14, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition to providing sweatshirts and rain ponchos for the homeless, Kaufman and Broad Chairman and CEO Bruce Karatz and employees of the company will serve a hot holiday dinner with all the fixings.

"The homeless population on the Westside of Los Angeles is the second largest in the county," said Karatz. "As a leader in the homebuilding industry, we are particularly sensitive to those who are without warmth and shelter, especially during the holidays, and this event is just one small way to provide a bit of support."

Virtually every Westside homeless person starts the process of rebuilding his or her life by attending the OPCC Access Center. Until people and families can meet their basic survival needs for food, clothing and shelter, they cannot begin to address the issues fundamental to long-term health and housing.

The OPCC Access Center provides emergency basic services to more than 200 no- and low-income homeless individuals and families five days a week. Each day, people receive a sack lunch, may shower and change clothes, have access to medical care and receive referrals to shelters. The Center also provides case management, a program of guidance and support to people who are working on the long-term goal of getting off the street. There is also an emergency food pantry, crisis intervention, on-site assistance with veteran's benefits, job training, HIV testing and a money assistance program.
