Former principal breaks her silence

Former Sanders-Clyde Elementary School Principal MiShawna Moore can't sleep or eat, and she can't escape bad dreams or anxiety attacks. Since she learned last month that the State Law Enforcement Division had opened an investigation into the authenticity of her former school's test scores, Moore's life has been put on hold. She compared it to a death sentence.

Lowcountry feeling squeeze

Chances are, you're not going out to eat as much as you once did. You buy what's on sale at the grocery store these days, do all your errands at once to save gas, maybe even turn off some of those 357 channels on the cable plan. Impulse buying? A thing of the| past. You're dreaming of a sparse Christmas. Everybody's doing it.

Banks agree to standstill

NEW YORK — Wachovia, Citigroup and Wells Fargo on Monday agreed to a standstill of all formal litigation activity, a sign that the banks and the Federal Reserve are working feverishly to reach an agreement over the fate of Wachovia. The standstill agreement will end at noon on Wednesday, unless extended. 'We are pleased to participate with the Federal Reserve Board in a fair-minded, good faith process to achieve a prompt and successful outcome,' Citigroup spokesman Michael Hanretta said in an e-mail.

Tigers determined to change the course of their season

CLEMSON — James Davis was besieged with questions and criticism from students who blasted play- calling and called for coach Tommy Bowden's ouster. A few of Michael Palmer's classmates told him his team stunk. He said a professor even mocked Clemson's annoying habit of blowing games it should win. The Tigers thought it was rough being booed off the field after their 20-17 home loss to Maryland on Sept. 27, but they've found the sentiment to be just as harsh walking around their own campus over the past week.

Deep in the heart

Mary Wilks was a little girl with a big imagination when she saw the name on the plaque at the Alamo in San Antonio. It was "Melton," the same as her grandmother's maiden name. So, she allowed herself to think she might have an ancestor who gave his life for Texas. Wilks didn't tell anyone about the man, Elijah Melton. She could not risk having someone burst her bubble. But every time Wilks studied the Alamo, the site of the famous Texas revolution battle, she thought about the hero who might be kin.

Bridge walkers may lose free parking
MOUNT PLEASANT — The town is considering putting an end to free roadside parking on Patriots Point Boulevard near Coleman Boulevard, a popular spot with Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge walkers and runners. Town Administrator Mac Burdette suggested the change Monday. Instead of the Patriots Point Boulevard roadside, runners and walkers could park at the new Memorial Waterfront Park when it opens. An extension of Wingo Way will connect the park and the bridge.

Planning nominee opts out
MONCKS CORNER — A developer is turning down a spot on the Berkeley County Planning Commission because he's tired of the controversy his potential appointment has caused, future Councilman Bob Call said Monday night. Call said Brandon Hawkins of Pendley Construction told him he no longer wanted the position shortly after The Post and Courier asked Hawkins questions about their political and business relationships.

Eternal Reefs make waves in Charleston
Carla and Thomas Jackson were buried Monday morning with their dog Nietzche. By afternoon they were receiving visitors: black sea bass, flounder, big red drum. The Jacksons' ashes were mixed into one of five globe-like concrete "eternal reefs" that were gently lowered into the ocean from a pitching shrimp boat as their families clung to the rails and paid their respects from a charter boat nearby. The odd "last goodbye" has been getting sea legs in Charleston over the past few years, as gradually as the fishing reef that it's building grows. As memorial services go, this one leaves families joyous and teary all at once. It's part burial at sea, part scattering the ashes and partly a way of giving the departed a purpose, as one family member said, a way to be part of creating new life, if marine. The departed usually have strong ties to the ocean or Charleston.
