Not so cool

MOUNT PLEASANT — It was warm in the Wando High School gym Wednesday, but that's nothing compared to what happens when outdoor temperatures soar. The higher the temperature, the less the gym's air-conditioning units work. The 4-year-old cooling system has been working inefficiently since it was installed, but the problems have gotten worse this past year. "You've got a heat box with bright lights," said Principal Lucy Beckham. "And an aluminum roof," added Assistant Principal Robert Woody.

Rescue from dangling cab

A passerby rescued a tractor-trailer driver left dangling three stories high inside a truck cab Wednesday after a crash on the Mark Clark Expressway, authorities said. Rescuers went to a westbound off-ramp in North Charleston at 10:54 a.m. for a report about a person trapped inside an 18-wheeler, North Charleston firefighters said.

Feathered friends from off

A new attraction planned for the South Carolina Aquarium next spring won't feel at home in the Piedmont exhibit or the Mountain Forest area or even the Salt Marsh display. But misfits or not, penguins attract crowds and make money. The aquatic, flightless birds are expected to occupy a habitat in the "Great Hall" near the main entrance, according to aquarium public relations manager Beth Nathan.

Poker players to get hearing
MOUNT PLEASANT — Five "Texas Hold 'em" poker players fighting gambling tickets from an April 2006 police raid finally get to argue that their case should be tossed out. South Carolina's anti-gambling laws are unconstitutional and unenforceable, they contend, and will ask a municipal court judge Friday to dismiss the case outright.

Satin gets a home
The camera loved Satin and so did Melinda Hamilton. The page-one pooch pictured in Wednesday's editions of The Post and Courier has a new home with Hamilton, a West Ashley resident. "I kind of missed having a little girl around the house," she said.
